Room:

Room:(2021) is a series of photographs taken of life in personal spaces focusing on the unique arrangement of one’s belongings and self. I chose to photograph my friends and family in their most naturally comfortable form, in their homes. Either with others or alone, I aimed at capturing the beauty of each character and how they showcase themselves through their decor. A room is special because it can serve as shelter, as a place where one can feel vulnerable. Being with each person in the solitude of their own world allowed for a glance at their private life and inner self. I photographed my subjects in a position they were most comfortable in and felt they spent most of their time in. Whether writing, reading, talking, or working, each person is in a state of contentment. My idea of capturing my friends and family in their rooms allows a different perspective of a seemingly monotonous situation. Each room tells something about that person, and each room has a unique aura about it. Just how every person is different, every room is different. I was inspired by each one of my close friends and families’ design of their rooms. What is hoped is for the viewers to see each and every detail of a person with just one image. Focusing on the natural pose of each subject simultaneously allows for a cohesive piece of work. I continued to capture more detailed still shots of rooms, getting to see the beauty in everyday objects that one might not see if not paying attention. I aim to evoke a feeling of melancholy with the still shots in order for viewers to look upon their own places of comfort and find love and admiration for their possessions. This project aims to document friends and family in their most pure and beautiful selves, while letting the viewer step back to see the beauty of candid moments and apply it to their own special rooms.
