These works were created in my Special Topics class focusing on Experimental Typography. The result of this project is a 2D, 3D, and digital creation of our choosing. For my first project utilizing 3D principles, I aimed to delve deep into the intricate art of crafting letterforms, with a specific focus on the creation of a non-conventional abstract font. It centered on the meticulous development of each letter using a grid system, aiming to bestow a unique visual identity upon the typeface. Drawing inspiration from the graceful curves and shapes found in free-flowing organic forms, particularly those achievable through liquid mediums like ink, the goal was to explore unconventional techniques in shaping letterforms.

The anticipated outcome of this project was the creation of a comprehensive set of linoleum stamps featuring the phrase “Surrender to the Flow” in the form of the font that has been crafted. By opting for a hand-cut approach to letter creation, the project looked to establish a connection between design and printmaking, providing an opportunity to delve into the nuances of relief printing. Through this process, I anticipated gaining valuable practice and insights into printmaking techniques. Additionally, the project aimed to experiment with using ink to sculpt letter shapes, adding further depth to the exploration of form and medium.

The desired result from embarking on the 2D project is the creation of a visually captivating and lively poster that exudes a sense of fun and dynamism. At its core, the main objective is to craft a poster that not only catches the eye but also delights the viewer, achieved through a process of experimentation with an array of elements such as shapes, techniques, and overall composition. The overarching focus lies in fostering an environment where creativity can truly flourish, without being bound by the constraints of strict precision. Instead, there's a readiness to embrace the concept of 'happy accidents,' welcoming the unexpected twists and turns that arise during the creative journey.

For my digital project, I've explored an innovative approach that merges photography with an unconventional medium: my own hair. My intention is to meticulously craft letterforms using strands of hair that have naturally fallen out. This unconventional choice of medium not only adds a unique dimension to the project but also offers me hands-on experience in shaping each letterform. The tactile process of physically manipulating the hair allows me to explore the textures and contours of each letter in a way that traditional mediums cannot replicate. My inspiration for this project stems from moments spent in the shower, where I often find strands of hair stuck to the walls. Intrigued by the organic shapes and patterns they formed, I playfully rearrange them into various shapes and forms. It's this sense of spontaneous creativity and exploration that I aim to channel into my project. Through a combination of photography and possibly scanning the hair directly from a scanner, I intend to document the intricate details and nuances of each letterform, capturing the essence of this unique artistic process.
